MEET THE TEAM

Ian Billson

One of the fastest Contact Lens Fitters in the U.K. ( I used to do track days on a very fast bike - 1000cc Yamaha ).

I try to take my birthday present into work with me a few days a week. Most say she is Gorgeous, but we call her Poppy.

We use her as our meet and greet ( she won't try to sell you anything, just happy with a tummy tickle ).

Colin
Optometrist

I qualified as an optometrist in 1984, after 4 years of university study. I have practised optometry throughout the world, with 5 of my own practices in the UK and Spain, I started regular locum work for Billson Opticians in 2016. I was highly impressed with the family values, and individual care given to our customers, and became a permanent optometrist.
I enjoy keeping active, and in 2016 won a gold medal in the 3000 meter event, at the Australian Masters Games (age related), held in Alice Springs.

Tracy
Dispensing Optician/Contact Lens Fitter

Started in Optics in 1987 when I was taken on as a temporary receptionist -qualified as a Dispensing Optician and 35 years later - still here !
I have worked mainly for independent opticians and enjoy the freedom this allows to look after your patients in the best way possible .
In my spare time , I am involved in a local amateur dramatic group ,both treading the boards and behind the scenes. I enjoy seeing live music and walking my dog but most of all I enjoy anything that makes me laugh and am willing to give most things a go . (Preferably with a gin & tonic in hand.)

ABOUT HALSTEAD

Halstead is situated in a valley and the name translates from old English to 'place of safety' or 'place of refuge' and is mentioned in the Domesday Book.

Halstead is a wool textile town and well known for its milling. The mill was part of Courtaulds textile company (now an antiques centre) and there are many buildings that this company provided for their staff including the hospital. Halstead still receives lots of visitors to the town because of the mill and all the old buildings in High Street which are decorated with floral displays that regularly win first place in Anglia in Bloom.

The building housing Billson Opticians is a 16th century, Grade 2 listed building in original timber framing and plastered in wattle and daub. A small section is encased in glass inside the building which people can view.

The building was previously used as a butchers and our consulting room was the chiller. All the slops were thrown into the river! The butchers was called Roots and Lin and Julie are descendants of this family as their mother was a Root!
